Most businesses don’t notice their SEO has stalled until months after it happens. Content keeps going out, reports still show activity, but the leads coming from search stop growing. Every month this stays unresolved is a month of demand going to a competitor who simply shows up first.
These are the four signs we see most often when a new client comes to us, and the first thing worth checking for each.
1. Rankings have plateaued despite regular publishing
If you’re publishing consistently and rankings aren’t moving, more content is rarely the answer. The usual causes are:
- Pages competing with each other for the same search term, so neither ranks well
- Content written around assumed keywords rather than what buyers actually type
- Technical issues that stop new pages from being crawled or indexed properly
Check first: In Google Search Console, look at how many of your pages are actually indexed compared with how many you’ve published. A large gap is a technical problem, not a content one.
2. Competitors with a weaker product consistently outrank you
Google doesn’t rank the best business. It ranks the page that best matches the search and looks most trustworthy. A competitor with a weaker offer can win because their pages answer the question more directly, or because other relevant sites link to them.
Check first: Search your three most valuable terms and read the top result for each. Ask honestly whether their page answers the searcher’s question better than yours does.
3. Technical issues have never been fully diagnosed
Crawl errors, slow pages, broken internal links and missing metadata quietly cap every other effort until they’re fixed. They’re also invisible unless someone goes looking.
Check first: Run your homepage and one key service page through PageSpeed Insights. If either scores poorly on mobile, that’s worth fixing before anything else.
4. Traffic exists but isn’t turning into qualified leads
Sometimes the traffic is fine and the problem is what happens after the click. Visitors land on a page that doesn’t match what they searched for, or there’s no clear next step.
Check first: Find the pages bringing in the most organic visitors and look at how many enquiries each one produces. High traffic with near-zero enquiries points to a mismatch in intent or a weak call to action.
What to do next
A stalled SEO programme needs a diagnosis before it needs a bigger budget. That’s why every engagement we run starts with a full technical, content and authority audit, so the plan is built around what your site actually needs rather than a fixed package.
Meaningful movement is typically visible within 90 to 120 days of fixing the right things. Timelines depend on your starting technical health and how competitive your niche is.
